road trip rest stop – the finale

It seems this road trip is coming to a close.  If you missed the first two rest stops and still have to go click here and here for the off ramp.  As if any of these places are big enough to need an off ramp.  haha.

This stop here is at the Manning Park Resort in duh Manning Provincial Park.  It is a popular destination year round being sort of a hub in the area.  Mostly, we just use it for a rest stop but one could book a vacation or a wedding here if you interested.  I stayed here once as a kid with my grandparents for a wedding.  It crosses my mind once in a while to do it again.

The park itself is almost 71,000 hectares of mountains, trees and wildlife.  There is camping, fishing and all sorts of things.  It is a great spot in the winter for skiing and all sorts cold weather sports.  Yuck.  Oops, did I say that?  Usually, I only see it in the summer driving back and forth from the Okanagan to the coast.  We are done it a couple of times in the winter but those winding mountain passes are no joke so we tend to fly instead.  Especially since that one time we had a little miscalculation of speed and the sharpness of the corner turning into this place.  Thankfully, a snow bank was there to break our collision course and everyone was ok.

The largest landslide in Canadian history when the entire south side of the mountain crashed down to the highway below in the early morning hours of January 9, 1965 near the town of Hope of BC.  An estimated volume of nearly 47 million cubic metres of rock, mud and debris crashed down and spread 279 ft deep and 3km (1.86miles) wide.  It tragically took the lives of the 4 people on the highway.  Only two of the bodies were recovered. The other two remain emtombed.  The slide was caused by seismic activity in the area.  The rest stop serves as a memorial and reminder of the awesome power of nature.

The pictures really don’t do the area justice.  It really is breathtaking.  This stop is the only one that never gets missed.

We may or may not of stopped at a Chevron in Chilliwack.  Although, I am sure you would of been delighted to see pictures of the Starbucks Double Shot expresso I desperately needed. I am leaving now with a picture of farm country that I took from the car.  I made the mistake of rolling down the window while we were driving to get the shot.  Never roll down the window in Chilliwack.
